ABOUT

Hello! I'm Dean Coburn, a lighting designer and programmer who splits his time between New York and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Through my work, I hope to enhance the visions of directors and my fellow designers through the manipulation of light and shadow in spaces.

Since graduating from the University of Houston with my BFA in Theatre Production, my work has been seen on stages including Teatro Dallas, Arts Mission Oak Cliff, Blue Firebox Theatre Company, and North Central Texas College. In my over two years as a production specialist for the Coppell Arts Center, I have not only designed but help facilitate both local and national touring productions, working with companies such as Theatre3, the Ballet Ensemble of Texas, and tours for shows like Disenchanted!, Dinosaur Zoo, and Broadway in Love.

I recently made the move to New York City, where I have decided to continue my artistic pursuits as a full-time freelancing artist. When I'm not designing, you can often find me at an independent cinema watching international and overlooked movies across many years. I also maintain a blog which covers the various states of awards seasons.

In addition to my lighting work, I am the co-host, editor, and audio engineer for the podcast Mutant Studies 101, where me and academic Morgan Ward examine the comics of the X-Men through various academic lenses, sometimes with guests.
